Trade union strike hits life in Agra

Trade-unionsAgra, (IANS) The day-long nationwide strike on Friday by Left-affiliated trade unions against the BJP-led central government’s “anti-labour” policies affected normal life in the city of Taj.

Shops, business establishments, markets, banks and financial institutions, government offices and educational institutions were closed and vehicles remained off the roads.

The state roadways employees began their strike action from mid-night, bringing to halt hundreds of buses.

The Jal Sansthan (water works) union announced on Thursday that all departments would be closed from Friday until their demands were met.

The work at the tehsil offices was disrupted as the staff went on strike.

The lawyers were also on strike. They protested at the district courts on Friday and stayed away from courts, demanding foolproof security arrangements for the lawyers, after a senior lawyer was attacked a few days ago.

The principals of government intermediate colleges were agitated and boiling with anger. They demanded that they be treated with dignity and respect by the government which was denying them their due status.

At the Central Hindi Institute, students from Odisha were on strike against the management for poor mess facilities. They held a dharna and stayed away from their classes for the third consecutive day on Friday.
