Tricolor designer Pingali …

pingali 001Credit goes to a Telugu man Pingali Venkiah for having designed the national tricolor flag and today his birthday is being celebrated on August 2, with éclat. He died penniless though he maintained a high profile working along with Mahatma Gandhi even in South Africa during the pre-independence days. He is said to have offered about 30 patterns to Gandhi at the plenary session of Congress party in Vijayawada in 1921 and the Mahatma selected one replacing the weaving machine with the Ashok Chakra at the centre of the flag after achieving the Independence. He breathed his last on July 4, 1963 at 86 and his wish was to drape his dead body with the national flag.  Born in Bhatla Penumarru in Krishna district on August 2, he did his diploma in geology and made experiments in cotton crop which came in praise of Pingali by the then British rulers.
