UK firm’s bid foiled: Use of Turmeric

unnamedIndia once again was successful to protect its traditional knowledge by preventing an attempt made by UK based Pangaea Laboratories Limited to take patent on a medicinal composition with turmeric, pine bark and green tea for treating hair loss. Traditional Knowledge Digital Library of CSIR located the patent application filed at European Patent office in 2011 by Pangaea Laboratories and filed pre-grant opposition along with evidences that turmeric, pine bark and green tea are still used to treat hair loss in Ayurveda and Unani. Recently, CSIR has also foiled an attempt of Colgate-Palmolive to patent a mouthwash formula with herb (Nutmeg- Jayaphal) extract at the Patent office.
