The Jamaat ud Dawa is declared a terrorist outfit by the US State department yesterday and stamped Nazir Ahmad Chaudhry and Muhammad Hussein Gill as Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGTs). Ahmad is currently LeT’s leader of the information wing and plays an active role in the operational finance issues of the outfit. Gill is the founding member of LeT and presently the chief financial officer.
The US treasury department has added the names of Jama’at-ud-Dawa, Al-Anfal Trust, Tehrik-e-Hurmat-e-Rasool (Movement for Defending the Honor of God), and Tehrik-e-Tahafuz Qibla Awwal (Movement for Safeguarding the First Center of Prayer) to the aliases of Lashkar e Taiba – LeT, which was banned in 2001. Jamaat ud Dawa has been a changed face of LeT since long, but has been posing as a muslim charity group for the preaching of Islam, politics, and social work.
LeT has recently carried out the attack on Indian embassy in Herat, Afghanistan on the 23rd of May, 2014.
“In targeting Lashkar-e-Taiba leadership, today’s (Wednesday) action demonstrates our unrelenting commitment to combating terrorism by disrupting terrorist groups’ financial activities,” said the Under Secretary of Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence David S Cohen.
“As a result of today’s (Wednesday) action, all property and interests in the United States or in the possession or control of US persons in which Ahmad and Gill have an interest are blocked and US persons are prohibited from engaging in transactions with them,” the Treasury said. “We will continue to target LeT’s financial foundation to disrupt and impede its violent activities,” Cohen added. Pakistan’s dual standards and partisan treatment of Hafeez Saeed, his open preaching of violence against India and US, his open hobnobbing with the Pakistani leadership will be under the international microscope more closely from now on.
