The 12 year old conjoined twins Veena and Vaani are to be separated soon if every thing goes well as per the plans. A three neuro surgeons team of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi visited the twin sisters at the Niloufer hospital, Hyderabad on Thursday. The doctors discussed the feasibility of the complicated and prolonged surgery on the conjoined twins and said that the girls would be shortly taken to AIIMS for further medical tests. Two months earlier, David Dunaway, head of Craniofacial Unit, Great Ormond Street Hospital, UK, and Noor Ul Owase Jeelani, the paediatric neurosurgeon at the same hospital, were in Hyderabad, reviewed the condition of the twins and discussed with their parents the complexities of a series of possible surgeries. The reason for their confidence is that they had successfully separated two such conjoined pairs.
As the state government wanted the surgery to be performed at the AIIMS, the AIIMS team visited the city. Shortly the London doctors will confer with their counterparts of the AIIMS and discuss whether the surgery is possible at the AIIMS. A total of five surgeries are to be carried out on the twins in 9 to 12 months time.
