‘Water-Mafia’ Active as Ground Water level Decreases

drillingAs the monsoon season ended with 35 per cent less rainfall this year, the ground water level in the city and its outskirts are set to reach new lows. A drought-like situation has been predicted by the State Ground Water Department.

Adding to the plight, the ‘water-mafia’ started drilling bore wells near lakes.

The revenue officials seized a borewell drilled illegally within the FTL or Full Tank Level of Parki Lake under the Quthbullapur mandal limits.

“A borewell drilling machine, belonging to one Guru Prasad, was seized as they were drilling near Parki Lake, which is illegal under WALTA. The Jeedimetla police has booked a case under the Act”, said Mr Krishna, Deputy collector of Quthbullapur mandal.

The social activists accused the local politicians of running the water mafia. “The cases are taken up by the officials only when we lodge a complaint. Otherwise, how it is it possible for borewells to come up near Ameenpur lake, Patancheru, Gangaram Cheruvu near Aparna Venture, Devunu Kunta in Gopannapally village on the city’s outskirt and Saroor Nagar Lake?” asked Thakur Rajkumar Singh, president of Human Rights and Consumers Protection Cell.
