Coming out in open on the contentious issue of special status, AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has questioned the opposition, particularly the YSRCP and Congress, of what is wrong if we accept special package instead of special status for the state. Speaking at a public meeting at Amaravati after laying the foundation stone for the administrative blocks, he said-“ the Centre has agreed to compensate whatever shortfall that may arise as a result of non-implementation of special status. They promised to give us the 30% deficit. So, what’s wrong in accepting to it?”
Mr Arun Jaitley, the Union Finance minister was also present in the meeting.
“I know special status has become an emotive issue. The status could not be given due to some technical reasons. But the Centre has come forward to meet all the additional expenditure. I agreed. But I request the Centre to make it as a law. Let there be a legal sanctity to the assurances because we have lost status due to lack of such a constitutional assurance. Congress has failed to incorporate the assurances given by Dr Manmohan Singh given on the floor of the House” Mr Naidu urged.
But he could not get a concrete assurance from Mr Jaitley to provide a legal sanctity to the assurances of compensating in return of special status.
