Why Iraq PM Nouri al Maliki finally resigned?

Why-Iraq-PM-Maliki-Nouri-ReA political crisis in Baghdad may come to an end since the Prime Minister of Iraq Nouri al Maliki has resigned.
The president of the country has asked Haider al-Abadi, a deputy speaker of parliament, to form a government.
Mr. Maliki’s previous refusal to step down, after eight years in power, had been considered responsible for deepening the crisis. The UN and US have welcomed his resignation.
Iraq’s government has been unable to stop Islamic State fighters from seizing vast areas in the northern parts of the country.
The offensive by the self-styled Islamic State, formerly known as ISIS, a Sunni Muslim jihadist, has triggered a security and humanitarian crisis, driving an estimated 1. 2 million Iraqis from their homes.
Mr. Maliki appeared on TV and spoke of the grave “terrorist” threat from IS before announcing his own withdrawal. Mr Maliki said that,”I announce before you today, to ease the movement of the political process and the formation of the new government, the withdrawal of my candidacy in favor of brother Doctor Haider al-Abadi,”
